Hooverville Comes To Madison

We Are Wisconsin was granted a permit this week to set up a campsite on the square surrounding the capitol building which they have named "Walkerville". Last night at 7pm the camp officially opened with about 100 people and several dozen tents.

Opponents of Walkerville have characterized it at a typical Madison student/hippie stunt with no apparent awareness of the irony intended by the organizers. Drawing it's name from Depression era "Hoovervilles" of shantytowns that sprung up across the  U.S. of homeless men and women. They served as a constant reminder of the human toll of the Depression and their namesake harangued the President who enacted policies which decimated the economy.

Walkerville will remain for the duration of the budget process provided they follow the rules outlined in their permit. It will be interesting to see how it plays out over the next few weeks. It's inhabitants however have not been just students with Dane County Supervisor, Sharon Corrigan setting up residence on the first night along.

Hippies? Hmmmm, she doesn't even have a vuvuzela!
