The Wisconsin Domestic Partnership Registry was established in 2009. Since that time many Wisconsin municipalities and public employers have extended employee benefits to registered domestic partners: Madison, Milwaukee, Sun Prairie, Gateway Technical, Oshkosh School District...you can see a list here.
Naturally, a number of familiar companies also offer domestic partner benefits: American Girl, Gannett Newspapers - owner of 10 WI papers (not the JT), Marcus Theaters, Marquette University, MillerCoors, SC Johnson and WEAC.
This is not an issue about dollars - although councilmen not in favor will make it so - it is an issue of fairness. The police officer who brought this to the attention of Mozol and Kaprelian-Becker could have filed a grievance and carried it through to a court case in which she would have likely won and cost the city a fortune. She brought it to the council for consideration that all city employees be included - as they should be.
It is time Alderman, do the right thing.
