Taking It Out On The Kids

The Department of Public Instruction issued a State-wide staffing report based on the effects of the massive school budget cuts instituted by Scott Walker and our friend on Joint Finance, Robin Vos.

~73 percent of school districts in the state reported cutting teachers this year.
~The 1,446 teacher position cuts represents a 75 percent increase over similar reductions made last year.
~74 percent of school districts to cut staff, including the largest, exorbitant cuts made to reading, special education, career and technical education teachers.

While the report is alarming, it should also be noted that these cuts were mitigated by $82 million from the Federal Education Jobs Act - money that will not be available next year.

These cuts will be a drop in the bucket next year.
